Board members with unresolved personality conflict are like trying to think with a migraine. The Scripture reminds us in Matthew 12:25 that a "house divided against itself will not stand." With unsettled discord, every decision will be tainted, and the church is far too important to expose her future to unhealthy decision makers.

This is where the pastor must take appropriate and biblical leadership. I do not believe that a board can be healthy without a healthy pastor. Before the pastor is a decision-maker, he or she is a shepherd. He or she is one who is committed to the "ministry of reconciliation." There is no substitute for that.

With grace, I would speak to each one individually and shepherd them toward God's best, helping them to see something much larger than their offense (or whatever the unresolved case may be) is at stake. If I can increase the primacy of the church and her future, then I can reduce the "pain" enough to bring remedy to each one without penalizing our decisions. If not, then I will ask one or both to step back (which illustrates to them the importance of clear hearts in leaders) but I would stay with them as individuals until the conflict is resolved. Then I would ask them to return.

I wish you had some advice for lay leaders who have realized that the majority of the board / council has conflicts with the Pastor that are inhibiting the decision making process. I'm not quite sure how we got here and I don't know how we get to a healthier place.

What do you do when you go to a church where it seems to be run by one family. Just about everyone there is related, except my small family, of course. When anyone makes a suggestion about anything it has to be run by this certain family. I love my church but feel I am not getting anywhere on the boards that I serve on due to this family. Should I find another church or keep praying that things will work out?

PRAY, The church is being stirred for a reason and only God can be the one to handle it! I sure would like the other questions answered though? Where do you go if it is the Pastor who has not handle the conflicts well?

One of the things I love about the scriptures is that the Word of God is so often counter-intuitive. That is, it is the opposite of what human understanding first reaches for. It is not logical to turn the other cheek - but we all know the power released when we do. It is not common sense to forgive seventy times seven times, but we all know the freedom that it commands when we do. So too with a Pastor who is wayward, struggling, or even wrong. The counter intuitive command of scripture is to honour them. David honoured Saul. Joseph honourd his oppressors. I cannot tell you how often I have seen the Spirit of God convict, change or empower a leader because those whom God has appointed to be their support have chosen to honour them rather than berate or seek change. If you aren't the Pastor then you are his/her support. God has placed you there. Dare to take God at His Word and honour that person. Yes, it is counter intuitive. But I guarantee you'll see God move ina powerful way.

Dear PB, Suggest you leave that church and join one where the pastor and board are chosen and elected by the congregation such as the Churches of Christ denomination, or be part of a house church where everyone is a pastor to each other (priesthood of believers).
