In most of the churches I work with, I hear, "Every year we have trouble finding enough workers." Rarely do I hear anyone say, "We have too many positions to fill." Whenever we have more slots than people to fill them, we automatically assume we're short on workers. Could it be that the root problem is not too few workers but too many slots?

It would be helpful to address this issue not only in a large church, but in a small one as well. Are there principles that apply to both? Is it common that we make jobs to as an unconscious means of avoiding ministry? Are there good resources that can help a nominating committee in a small church who feel overwhelmed by the "slots" but have difficulty moving beyond them.

What streamlining has meant to one local church in my area. Seven years ago they got a dynamic minister to grow the church. Now attendance is down to 40. Streamlining has meant doing away with "old-fashioned ministries which have outlived their usefulness" , such as Men's fellowship (had been very active), Women's club, Group for singles & marrieds, children's ministries (Sunday School, Children's talk during church, Junior Church (not necessary since there's no kids) VBS, midweek group like Pioneer Clubs, Sparks,) Weight loss club, Alpha, 4 choirs ( there's now a 2 person worship team). There's a new very small young couples club, a small group on Sunday evenings, an adult Bible study Sun morn. Also since Sunday became a working day, a quarter of members have to work. Few people can get off with an excuse like going to Church. Some come to church on their way to or from work. This is the new reality.
