Overview

When the church budget gets tight, hard decisions must be made. In times like these, many churches are making those hard decisions.

To help your church board or committee practice making hard decisions about the budget, we've assembled a trio of case studies. Two of these stories come from real-life churches; the third is our own invention. For each study we provide The Scenario (a one-page description of the situation, which leaves the reader with a decision to make), The Issues Beneath (a one-page exploration of the competing interests and values that will inform the decision), and Expert Perspectives (one page of commentary from current/former pastors Mark Buchanan, Gary Fenton, and John Koessler). As you work though each of these case studies, you and your team will be forced to decide how to prioritize competing values in a concrete church situation.

NOTE: You have permission to make up to 1,000 copies of this 12-page resource to be distributed in a church or educational setting.
